Digital Lab Assignments

As we work on enlarging prints in the darkroom, we are simultaneously going to be working on some Photoshop assignments in the digital lab! You will find a Photoshop tutorial and handout in the previous post (Boxer Restoration).

1. Scan your collage (the original) into Photoshop (if you need a refresher on how to use the scanners, see here), save it as a jpeg, and post it to Flickr. ALSO create a B&W negative of your collage, save it as a jpeg, and post that to Flickr, too. Add these to our class group.

2. Name tag Photoshop assignment!

Using your portrait, gum photo, color collage, and B&W collage negative (must somehow incorporate all 4), create a name tag to use on the darkroom/digital lab board:

• Find your portrait & gum photos on the hard drive (go to Shared Items in the Finder window>Base Station>Sturges> our class folder. (Make sure to click the eject icon on the Base Station after getting your images, so that others can access it!)
• Drag your collage images from Flickr into Photoshop
• Create a new document that is 5" tall by 3.5" wide at 150 resolution
• Make sure to include a text layer that has your name and period on it
• Save a PSD to your USB drive
• Flatten the image and save it as a jpeg
• Save the final, flattened jpeg onto the hard drive in the "Final Name Tag" folder

3. Restoration of the boxer image

• Use the tutorial & handout below to help you restore the boxer
• Make sure to save it as a PSD on your USB drive as you work

THINGS LEFT ON THE DESKTOP WILL BE DELETED! (This is to protect your hard work!)

You can print out the Boxer Restoration handout if you like! Make sure that you change the page formatting/layout to horizontal first.

Its Photoshop time! Download the boxer image below by clicking on it to enlarge it, dragging it to the desktop, and then opening Photoshop. Go to File>Open>Desktop>boxer_original.jpg. Click Open. (Or, just drag the downloaded file into Photoshop.) Wooo!

Use what we've learned in class as well as the Photoshop Tools/Boxer Restoration handout (below) to follow the steps (in the handout) to explore the different tools and restore your photo. Remember to save your work to your USB drive as you go AND before you try something new, so if you mess up you can just undo it.

Collage as social commentary

Photography and collage have a lot in common. Collage as an art form began as photographic images became more readily available as an art material. Artists could use and appropriate (or borrow and change) images created in their culture or society in order to create new works of art. After making our own cameras and taking lens-less photographs we will now create our own negatives and make camera-less images.

Snapshot vs. Composed

What makes a photograph a snapshot or a composed image? Here are some general distinctions:


Snapshot:

• A casual record of an event, person, object, or place
• Usually a very quick response to a situation
• Unorganized, and no attention has been paid to details
• Only the photographer has an emotional connection to the image

Composed Photograph:

• An artistic interpretation of an event, person, object, or place
• Care has been taken to consider the elements and principles that exist within the frame of the composition
• Organized frame where attention has been paid to expressing an emotion or telling the viewer something meaningful about the subject

Your homework for Thursday (9/23) is to find one example EACH of a snapshot and a composed photograph, tape these into your sketchbook, and write about WHY the images are snapshot/composed.

Read carefully and answer these questions in your sketchbook, be insightful and explain all parts of your opinion in order to support it.

1. "Because there is no viewfinder, it allows you to relinquish your soul to the camera." In your opinion, what does professor Daniel Kazimierski mean when he says this?

2. In professor Kazimierski's opinion, what are pinhole photographer's reacting against in the typical world of photography?

3. "Pinhole is not a point and shoot affair but an exploration." In your opinion, what does Eric Renner mean when he makes this statement about the process of using a pinhole camera?

4. Read the section, "Every Image is a Surprise," then, identify one artist and explain how this artist uses pinhole photography in an interesting way.

5. ** Now that you have taken photographs with your pinhole camera, what excites you, or interests you about this camera as opposed to other "normal" cameras you have photographed with? Explain why. **

3. Upload your CLICK! picture to your Flickr account & title it "Pattern"

4. Go to the CLICK! group ("Photo 1 2010-2011 CLICK") and click on "add something?" (near where it says Group Pool in pink)

5. Select your "Pattern" photo from your Photostream, then click "add to group" (below where your selections go)

6. Congratulate yourself! You have completed what is due by 11:59 PM tonight (9/7/10)!


VOTING:

7. Wait until after 12:01 AM on 9/8/10 (but BEFORE 11:59 PM on 9/9/10) (we EXTENDED the voting deadline!)

8. Look at everyone's images in the "Photo 1 2010-2011 CLICK" group. There will be about 60 or so. Choose what you feel to be, in your opinion, the top three images that fit the criteria (click here for criteria). You may want to jot down notes as you do this (for example: IAmSashaFierce407's has good lines, LittleMonster72's is awesome, HinesWardRocks86's might be my favorite so far) so that you have an easy time remembering what you liked.

9. Go to the "Photo 1 2010-2011 CLICK" group. Under the Group Pool, you'll see the header: Discussion. Click on the discussion called "9/7" Pattern" by Mr. Cecil (this is the discussion for ALL THREE Photo 1 classes).

10. Click in the box under "Reply to this topic?" and list the author's name of the images you chose as the top three. For example:

CLICK! A bi-weekly digital photo contest!

Guidelines:

To celebrate the ease and enjoyment of digital photography (not to mention the amazing things one can do with a digital image!), I'm introducing *CLICK!* a digital photo contest. Every other week, a new *CLICK!* challenge will be revealed and posted here on the class blog. Some of these assignments will be completely open to your interpretation, while others are very literal and will require you to follow directions exactly.

Sometimes we will have a class critique where we will vote on one work as "Best in Show." Each "Best in Show" winner will get their winning photograph printed at a large scale, and will have the option of having their work exhibited around school.

* A student may not receive the "Best in Show" award more than twice during the course of the school year.

Each entry will be worth a 20 point homework grade, and will be graded according to the following criteria:

Objective/Concept: To what degree do you solve the problem? To what extent do you creatively solve it as an independent thinker? Did you solve it out of convenience, or did you take time to think of a good idea, plan, and then execute it well? Did you think of the problem literally, or did you personalize it and come up with a personal, meaningful response?

Design: How elegantly do you employ a photographic principle of composition, or use a principle of design in your work?

Studio Skills: How well do you consider and employ proper exposure settings on your camera when taking this picture? Did you use the correct white-balance setting? Is the exposure clean and clear? Well focused?

Presentation: Did you make any necessary adjustments on Photoshop to adjust color or clarity? Is it cropped correctly? Did you upload it to the Flickr pool at the proper image resolution and by the corresponding due date?

Each photo must be posted to the Photo 1 2010-2011 CLICK group pool by 12:00 AM the evening before the due date to be considered on time, and to be eligible for a "Best in Show" award.

Each photo must be posted at a minimum resolution of 72 dpi or 800x1200 pixels.

Pinhole cameras!

Bring in a container for a pinhole camera as soon as possible. (For those of you NOT in 10th grade, please bring it on or before Thursday, September 2nd.) It must be:

1. light tight
2. sturdy (not like the Cheerios box that kept falling over)
3. the appropriate size (too small or too shallow and your photos will be tiny, too big and it may be difficult to use or just a waste of photo paper)

The best containers have been metal tins about the size of a shoebox or large cookie tin, oatmeal containers work well also.

If you can't decide (or are feeling ambitious,) feel free to bring more than one box!

Flickr

Use the link on the right to go to Flickr and choose to create an account. It will ask you to sign in with a Yahoo email address. If you don't have one sign up for one (don't worry you never have to use it). Then once you create a Flickr account choose a name that I will recognize (CSturges not IAmSashaFierce407) and search for me: Ms. Sturges - RHHS, make sure to click on people when you search. You can also search for your photo class under groups (6 Photo 1 Sturges 2010) and send an invite to me asking to join the group.

Flickr is a free online portfolio space serving a community of photographers around the world. It will be used for the bi-weekly digital "CLICK" assignments, submitting homework to be graded to a group pool, and where you will upload and store your digital portfolio of work you produce in this class, and a place for looking at and discussing your peers' work.

Welcome to Photo 1! Read through our syllabus (which is easiest to do if you click "fullscreen"), show it to your parent or guardian (you can click "print" FROM THE FULLSCREEN if you like), and then VIEW and PRINT OUT the contract.

Both you AND your parent or guardian need to sign the syllabus contract (which is the second document) to indicate that you both have read and understood the syllabus.
